How Often to Clean Carpets With Pets and Kids: A Schedule by Household
How often to clean carpets with pets or toddlers: a schedule by household, warranty notes, signs it is time. Seattle area. Text for a written price.

How often to clean carpets with pets: plan on professional cleaning every 6 to 12 months and vacuuming pet areas daily or close to it. Several pets, a puppy or accidents put you at the 6-month end; one calm pet and shoes off at the door can stretch toward 12. Shaw Floors’ care guide gives 6 to 18 months.
How often should carpets be professionally cleaned?
For most homes the answer falls between 6 and 18 months, and the busier the home, the shorter the interval. Shaw Floors’ carpet care guide recommends professional hot water extraction every 6 to 18 months depending on traffic, vacuuming high-traffic lanes daily and all carpeted areas weekly.
“Traffic” is the key word. A carpet does not know how many bedrooms you have; it knows how many feet, paws and spills cross it each day. Two adults who leave shoes at the door put far less soil into a carpet than a family with a dog, two kids and a back door onto a wet lawn.
Vacuuming does most of the work between cleanings. Professional carpet cleaning then handles what the vacuum cannot: the oily film in traffic lanes, spills that soaked in, and buildup that dulls the color. For homes we use hot water extraction rather than a low-moisture method; our comparison of hot water extraction vs dry carpet cleaning explains why.
How often should you clean carpets with pets?
With one pet, every 6 to 12 months; with several pets or accidents, every 6 months. Pets add hair, dander, coat oils, mud from the yard and the occasional accident, and they use the same paths and favorite spots every day. This is the schedule we suggest, inside the 6 to 18 month range above:
| Household | Vacuuming | Professional cleaning |
|---|---|---|
| Adults only, no pets, shoes off | Weekly, traffic lanes more often | Every 12–18 months |
| Shoes worn indoors, busy entry | Traffic lanes several times a week, all rooms weekly | About every 12 months |
| One dog or cat | Pet areas and lanes daily or every other day, all rooms weekly | Every 6–12 months |
| Several pets, a puppy, or an older pet with accidents | Pet areas daily, all rooms weekly | Every 6 months, plus spot treatment as needed |
| Crawling baby or toddler | Play areas daily or every other day, all rooms weekly | Every 6–12 months |
| Someone with allergies or asthma | All rooms weekly with a sealed vacuum | Every 6–12 months |
Accidents do not wait for the schedule. Blot fresh urine right away; spots that keep smelling need pet odor treatment rather than a routine cleaning. Tell us where the accidents happened and we treat each area for $52. Our article on pet urine carpet treatment explains what it can and cannot fix.
Before
AfterHow often should you vacuum with pets?
Vacuum the places your pets sleep, eat and walk daily or every other day, and every carpeted room at least weekly. Most soil in carpet is dry grit and hair, and it is far easier to remove before it is ground into the pile.
Go slowly with overlapping strokes, and empty the canister or bag before it is full, because suction drops as it fills. On our visits we dry vacuum every room before any water touches the carpet, so loose hair and grit come out instead of turning into mud.
How often should carpets be professionally cleaned with kids?
Every 6 to 12 months, with extra attention to the rooms where kids play and eat. Crawling babies and toddlers spend their day on the floor, and the floor collects what they drop: juice, milk, crackers, crayons and mud from shoes. Blot milk and other protein spills with cool water, never hot, because heat can set them.
A rhythm that works for many families:
- Vacuum the play area daily or every other day, and the rest of the house weekly.
- Put a washable rug under the high chair and in the main play spot, and wash it often.
- Keep a white cloth and a spray bottle of plain water handy for spills.
- Book a professional cleaning before the baby starts crawling, and again every 6 to 12 months.
If the baby is not here yet, our room-by-room plan for cleaning before baby arrives covers the nursery and the timing.
After a cleaning, keep kids off the carpet until it is dry, usually 4 to 8 hours. Our guide on what to do with carpet stains before professional cleaning has a table for common kid spills.
What if someone in the home has allergies?
Vacuum weekly with a sealed vacuum and book professional cleaning toward the short end of the range. The EPA’s asthma triggers guide advises vacuuming carpets and furniture every week with a HEPA-filter vacuum and having people with asthma or allergies leave the area being vacuumed. It also suggests keeping pets out of the bedroom of the person with asthma and off the furniture.
We do not claim that carpet cleaning removes allergens or dust mites, and it is not medical treatment. We vacuum before extraction and rinse out what vacuuming leaves behind; that is one part of keeping indoor dust down, along with weekly vacuuming.
Does carpet warranty require professional cleaning?
Some warranties do, so check yours before you set a schedule. Shaw’s cleaning guidance, for example, says carpet in a typical household should be cleaned every 12 to 18 months, and that Shaw warranties require proof of periodic cleaning by hot water extraction. Other brands word their terms differently, and terms can vary by product line.
In your own warranty booklet, look for three things: how often cleaning is required, which method or equipment is accepted, and what counts as proof. If the booklet is lost, the store that sold the carpet or the manufacturer can usually look up the terms. Keep every cleaning receipt with the date, rooms and method on it; our short written report with before and after photos is that kind of record.
What are the signs carpet needs cleaning?
The schedule is a guide; the carpet tells you when it is ready. Book sooner if you notice:
- Traffic lanes that look gray or darker than the rest of the room.
- A pet smell when the room is warm or the weather is damp.
- Carpet that feels gritty or stiff under bare feet.
- A vacuum canister that fills up much faster than usual.
- Spots that come back after you blot them.
- A move, a new baby, a new pet or a house sale coming up.
A damp, musty smell rather than a pet smell has different causes; see our article on musty carpet smell.
How can you keep regular carpet cleaning affordable?
Clean the busy rooms more often and the quiet rooms less. A family room and a playroom used daily may need cleaning every 6 months, while a guest room can wait 18.
For a whole-house cleaning, room packages bring the per-room price down: 3 rooms $220, 5 rooms $306, 7 rooms $406, with a $220 minimum. If you have recurring cleaning with us, weekly from $270 or every two weeks from $290 for a studio or 1 bedroom, you can add carpet extraction to a visit at $59 per room, minimum two rooms, which makes it easy to rotate the two busiest rooms. Heavy pet hair is a $42 add-on to a house cleaning; our guide to house cleaning with pets explains when that add-on applies. All prices are on our pricing page and are the same in Mill Creek and our other licensed cities.
Our jobFAQ
Does carpet cleaning remove pet hair?
Mostly through vacuuming. We dry vacuum every room before extraction, and the rinse lifts more of what is caught in the pile. Hair woven deep into thick carpet can take several passes, so vacuuming pet areas often between cleanings keeps it from building up.
Should I wait until the puppy is house-trained to clean the carpet?
Usually yes for the full cleaning. Blot and rinse accidents as they happen, and keep a note of where they were. Once training is mostly done, book one cleaning with treatment of the affected areas, so you are not paying twice for spots that are likely to be hit again.
How soon can pets walk on carpet after cleaning?
Once it is fully dry, usually 4 to 8 hours and up to 12 in cold, damp weather. Paws track dirt into damp fiber and leave marks. Set up a spot for pets on a hard floor for the day, and check the base of the pile in a corner before you let them back in.
