Hot water extraction vs dry carpet cleaning comes down to rinse versus speed. Hot water extraction, often called steam cleaning, flushes soil and residue out of the carpet and dries in 4 to 8 hours. Dry, low-moisture cleaning dries in 1 to 2 hours but captures soil instead of rinsing it out. For most homes, extraction is the better choice.

What is hot water extraction?

Hot water extraction sprays a heated solution into the carpet pile and pulls it straight back out with strong suction, along with the soil it loosened. Most people know it as steam cleaning, but very little steam is involved. The point is the rinse: water goes in, and water, soil and cleaning solution come back out.

On our residential carpet cleaning visits, extraction is one step in a sequence:

  1. Inspection: fiber check, stains marked and photographed.
  2. Dry vacuuming, because most soil in carpet is dry grit and should not be wetted in.
  3. Pre-spray and agitation on traffic lanes and spots.
  4. Hot water extraction in slow, overlapping passes, with extra rinse passes where soil is heavy and edges and stairs done by hand.
  5. Extra dry passes to pull water back out, then air movers to start drying.

What is dry carpet cleaning?

“Dry” carpet cleaning is a group of low-moisture methods. None of them is fully dry: all use some liquid, just far less than extraction. The three you are most likely to hear about:

  • Encapsulation. A solution is worked into the carpet with a machine brush. As it dries, it forms crystals that hold the soil, and those are vacuumed out afterward.
  • Absorbent compound. A damp powder is brushed into the carpet, picks up soil, and is vacuumed out.
  • Bonnet cleaning. A spinning pad dampened with solution runs over the surface and lifts soil from the top of the fibers.

What they share is speed. What they give up is the rinse: soil is captured and vacuumed rather than flushed out.

Is steam carpet cleaning better than dry cleaning?

For a home carpet that gets real use, yes. Here is a side-by-side of the two methods:

Low-moisture cleaning does what it is designed to do: it lifts a good share of the soil that makes traffic lanes look gray. Where it falls short is ground-in soil and anything below the surface, such as old spills in the backing or years of buildup in a family room. On those carpets it can make the surface look better for a while without reaching the cause.

Neither method fixes wear, matting, sun fading, bleach spots or dye loss. Those are changes to the fiber, not dirt. All our room prices are on the pricing page, and our guide to carpet cleaning cost per room explains how rooms are counted.

How long does carpet take to dry after each method?

Extraction leaves carpet damp for 4 to 8 hours with air movers running and a window cracked, and up to 12 hours in cold, damp weather. Encapsulation is dry in about 1 to 2 hours.

At home, a few hours of drying is easy to plan around: clean in the morning, use the room in the evening. Our article on how long carpet takes to dry after cleaning covers when you can walk on it and how to speed it up.

What do carpet manufacturers recommend?

Manufacturer guidance is a useful tiebreaker, and Shaw Floors is clear about it. In its carpet cleaning guidance, Shaw Floors says research indicates hot water extraction gives the strongest cleaning results, and that Shaw warranties require the homeowner to show proof of periodic cleaning by hot water extraction. The same page warns that some systems may leave residues which accelerate re-soiling.

Shaw’s guidance also puts a typical household at a cleaning every 12 to 18 months. Other brands word their requirements differently, so read the warranty for your own carpet and keep every receipt with the date and method on it.

Which method is better for pets and heavy soil?

Hot water extraction, with extra steps. Pet accidents leave salts and uric acid in the backing and sometimes the pad, and a low-moisture clean only works on the top of the fiber. For pet spots we ask where the accidents happened, check those areas for stains and smell, apply an enzyme or oxidizing treatment with time to work, then rinse and extract. That is a separate pet odor treatment at $52 per affected area.

Choose extraction if the carpet has not been cleaned in a year or more, traffic lanes are dark, there are pet accidents, or a warranty asks for it. A low-moisture clean can still make sense as a quick refresh before guests, as long as it is not the only cleaning the carpet ever gets. If lanes turn gray again soon after any cleaning, read why carpet looks dirty again after cleaning.

What about office carpet?

Encapsulation is popular in offices, because a floor cleaned in the evening can be dry by morning. We do not offer it at the moment. For small offices we use hot water extraction and schedule it so the carpet has time to dry, usually a Friday evening or a Saturday. Our comparison of encapsulation vs hot water extraction for office carpet explains both methods. This article is about homes in Woodinville and our other licensed cities in Snohomish and King County.

If you are weighing a pro visit against renting a machine: a rental uses the same method, and for light soil a careful DIY job can be enough. What a pro visit adds is the work around the machine, from pre-treatment and extra rinse passes to drying and a written price. See whether professional carpet cleaning is worth it.

FAQ

Is dry carpet cleaning cheaper than hot water extraction?

Prices vary by company, so compare written quotes for the same rooms. Cheaper per visit is not cheaper per year if the carpet still needs a deep rinse later. For homes we price extraction by the room, $82 per room up to 200 sq ft with a $220 minimum, confirmed in writing from your photos before we come.

Can dry carpet cleaning void a carpet warranty?

It can, if the warranty names hot water extraction. Shaw’s warranty terms ask for proof of periodic hot water extraction, and other brands set their own rules. Read the warranty for your carpet and keep a receipt for every cleaning that shows the date and the method used.

Does hot water extraction shrink carpet?

Synthetic wall-to-wall carpet, such as nylon, polyester and olefin, handles extraction well when the water is pulled back out with extra dry passes. Shrinking and browning are mainly risks with natural fibers like wool, jute and viscose. We do not clean wool, silk, viscose or antique rugs; we refer those to a rug specialist.

Is low-moisture carpet cleaning safe for pets?

Ask any company which product it uses and whether you can see the label. Keep pets and children off the carpet until it is dry and any residue has been vacuumed. On extraction jobs we use plant-based and EPA Safer Choice products, and fragrance-free on request, and spot products are tested first in a hidden area.
