How to Prepare for Carpet Cleaning: A 20-Minute Checklist

Canister vacuum cleaner standing on a carpeted floor

How to prepare for carpet cleaning in 20 minutes: what to pick up, what we move, pets, water and power. Snohomish & King County. Text for a written price.

By Yuri and Tatiana, owners of Shining Cleanse LLC, a family cleaning company based in Everett, WA and licensed in 10 cities across Snohomish and King County.

To prepare for carpet cleaning, pick up small items from the floor, clear breakables off light furniture, and decide where pets will stay until the carpet is dry, usually 4 to 8 hours. Then make sure the cleaners can park near the door and reach an outlet and a water tap. It takes about 20 minutes.

Below is a fuller version of the prep reminder we text the day before our own carpet cleaning visits, with the reason behind each step. With us you do not need to vacuum first or move beds and dressers.

What is on the 20-minute checklist?

Work through it the evening before or the morning of the visit. The minutes are a guide for an average 2 or 3 bedroom home.

MinutesTaskWhy it matters
0–6Pick up everything small: shoes, toys, laundry, cords, pet bowls, floor plants, basketsEvery item left on the floor is carpet we clean around instead of under
6–10Take breakables, papers and small items off chairs, side tables and nightstandsWe move light pieces, and they should be empty when we lift them
10–12Tie up floor-length curtains and bed skirts a few inches off the floorFabric that touches wet carpet can pick up moisture and color
12–14Lift cords for TVs, computers and chargers off the floorWe do not move electronics, so the cords near them need to be clear
14–16Decide where pets will stay for 4–8 hours: a room without carpet, a crate or a yardPets should stay off the carpet until it is dry
16–18Clear a parking spot close to the door and a path to each roomLess carrying, faster setup, more time on the carpet
18–20Find an outlet and a water tap we can reach, and list the stains you care about and what you used on themKnowing past products changes how we treat a spot

If you only have 10 minutes, do the first row, the pets and the parking. Those three make the biggest difference.

Do I need to move furniture before carpet cleaning?

Only small things. We move light pieces ourselves: chairs, small tables and lamps. We do not move beds, dressers, pianos, electronics or china cabinets; we clean around them and under what we can safely lift.

ItemWho handles it
Dining chairs, side tables, floor lamps, ottomansWe move them, then set them back on plastic tabs
Shoes, toys, baskets, clothes, plantsYou, before we arrive
Items on top of small tables and nightstandsYou, so nothing falls when a piece is lifted
Beds, dressers, bookcases, pianosStay in place; we clean around them
TVs, computers, gaming systems, stereo gearStay in place; please clear the cords
China cabinets and glass display unitsStay in place

Full dressers and bookcases can crack at the joints when lifted, and electronics are easy to damage. If something does get damaged during any cleaning, here is what to do if a house cleaner breaks something. Carpet under a bed also gets almost no foot traffic. The dirt is in the traffic lanes, doorways and the area in front of the sofa.

When we set furniture back down, it goes on plastic tabs. Leave them under the legs for 24 hours, because wood stain and metal legs can mark damp carpet. Shaw Floors, a carpet manufacturer, also recommends protectors under heavy furniture legs as part of everyday carpet care.

Should I vacuum before the carpet cleaners come?

Not for our visits. We vacuum every room before any water touches the carpet, because most soil in carpet is dry grit, and wetting it pushes it deeper. That step is included in the price.

What helps more is leaving stains alone in the days before. Store spot sprays can leave a sticky residue, and some products set a stain so it no longer lifts. If you already tried something, tell us what it was. We test our own spot treatment in a hidden area first and use the mildest product that works.

If you are still deciding between a rental machine and a pro visit, our article on whether professional carpet cleaning is worth it compares the two.

What do I do with pets during carpet cleaning?

Plan for pets and small children to stay off the carpet until it is dry, usually 4 to 8 hours and up to 12 in cold, damp weather. A closed room with hard floors, a bathroom with a bed and water, or a crate all work. If a dog needs to go out, plan a route that avoids the cleaned rooms.

If there are old pet accidents, mention them when you book and include a photo. Urine is not dirt, and normal carpet detergent does not break it down. Our pet odor treatment starts with you showing us where the accidents happened, then an enzyme or oxidizing product with time to work, and costs $52 per affected area. Knowing about it beforehand means it is in the written price, not a surprise on the day.

Do carpet cleaners need my water and power?

Yes. We need three things: a parking spot near the door, an outlet, and a water tap we can reach. We bring everything else: the vacuum, the carpet cleaning equipment, cleaning products and air movers.

  • A driveway spot or the closest street spot to your door. Whether it is a house with a driveway or a Mill Creek townhouse with visitor parking, tell us about gate codes and parking rules.
  • A clear path from the door to each room, including the stairs.
  • One working outlet near the carpeted area, and a sink or tub tap we can use.
  • A door code, lockbox or someone home to let us in. You do not have to stay.
  • Your count of stairs and landings. Stairs are $5 per step and $10 per landing; our article on why stairs are priced per step explains the difference in work.

The day before, we text a reminder with the short version of this list. On the day, we text 30 minutes before we arrive.

What happens during the visit?

The visit follows the same order every time:

  1. Walk-through. We check the fiber, mark and photograph the stains, and note anything already worn or faded with you.
  2. Vacuum every room, edges included.
  3. Pre-spray and agitate traffic lanes and spots, so soil loosens before extraction.
  4. Hot water extraction. Heated solution goes into the carpet and is immediately pulled back out with the loosened soil, followed by extra dry passes to leave as little water as possible.
  5. Spot treatment. Most household stains come out. Old dye stains, bleach spots, rust and dried paint may not, and we tell you that before we start.
  6. Air movers and after photos. Air movers start the drying, and you get a short report with before and after photos and drying advice.

You pay by card or Zelle when the work is done. If a spot wicks back up as the carpet dries, text us a photo within 48 hours and we come back to re-treat that area at no charge. Room prices are on our pricing page, and our guide to carpet cleaning cost per room explains how rooms are counted.

What should I do in the first 24 hours after cleaning?

  • Walk on the carpet in clean socks only, not bare feet or outdoor shoes.
  • Keep a window cracked and point a fan across the carpet.
  • Keep pets off until the carpet feels dry at the base of the pile.
  • Leave the plastic tabs under furniture legs for 24 hours.
  • Do not put area rugs back on top until the carpet below is fully dry.

Our guide to how long carpet takes to dry after cleaning has more on speeding it up. Moving out rather than staying? Empty the unit first and clean last; our article on what a move-out carpet cleaning receipt should show your landlord covers the paperwork.

FAQ

Should I pre-treat stains before the carpet cleaner arrives?

No. Blot up anything fresh with a white towel and cold water, then leave it. Store sprays can leave residue or set a stain, and a stain that has been scrubbed or heated is harder to remove. Tell us what is on the spot and what, if anything, was used on it, so we can choose the right product.

What should I do with area rugs on top of the carpet?

Roll them up and move them off the carpet before we arrive, so the carpet underneath gets cleaned. Put them back only when the carpet below is fully dry. We do not clean wool, silk, viscose or antique rugs; those need a rug specialist.

Is it better to clean carpet before or after moving in?

Before, if you can. Empty rooms mean every square foot gets cleaned and nothing sits on damp carpet. Leave the rest of the day for drying before furniture arrives, and book the cleaning after any painting or repair work so dust and paint drips are not tracked onto fresh carpet.
