Carpet Stairs Cleaning Cost: Why Stairs Are Priced Per Step

Carpeted staircase with wood handrail and iron balusters next to a front entry hall

Carpet stairs cleaning cost in Snohomish & King County: $5 per step, $10 per landing, a 14-step example and drying time. Text for a written price.

By Yuri and Tatiana, owners of Shining Cleanse LLC, a family cleaning company based in Everett, WA and licensed in 10 cities across Snohomish and King County.

Carpet stairs cleaning cost with us is $5 per step and $10 per landing, so a straight 14-step staircase is $70, or $80 with one landing. Stairs are priced per step because each tread, riser and front edge is cleaned by hand with a small tool, which takes far longer per square foot than open floor.

Every rate here comes from our carpet cleaning price list and our pricing page, and the stair count goes into your written quote before we come, so it does not change on the day.

How much does it cost to clean carpeted stairs?

Stairs are an add-on to a carpet visit, priced by count, not by size. Here is the full set of numbers that can apply to a staircase:

ItemPrice
Each step$5
Each landing$10
Hallway up to 80 sq ft (booked with 2 or more rooms)$42
Room up to 200 sq ft$82
Minimum visit$220
Pet odor treatment$52 per affected area
Heavy soil, decided from photos before the visit+30%

The minimum matters most for stairs-only jobs. Fourteen steps come to $70, but a visit with nothing else is billed at the $220 minimum. Stairs make the most sense booked with rooms, a hallway, or a sofa in the same visit, where the $5 per step simply adds to the total. Prices include travel to Mukilteo and our other licensed cities. Washington sales tax, where it applies, is a separate line on the quote.

Why are stairs priced per step?

Because the work depends mostly on the number of steps, not the area. Every step, narrow or wide, needs the same sequence on three surfaces: vacuum, pre-spray, agitate, extract and dry-pass.

Here is the math on an example. Say your stairs are 36 inches wide, each tread is 10 inches deep, each riser is 7 inches tall, and the carpet wraps about 2 inches around the front edge. That is roughly 19 inches of carpet per step, times 36 inches of width, or about 4.75 square feet per step. Fourteen steps hold roughly 66 square feet of carpet.

AreaCarpetOur pricePrice per sq ft
Bedroom, 200 sq ft200 sq ft$82about $0.41
14 steps, example aboveabout 66 sq ft$70about $1.06

So stairs cost about two and a half times as much per square foot as a bedroom. Rooms are counted differently; our guide to carpet cleaning cost per room explains how. The reason is time and access. On open floor, the extraction wand moves in long overlapping strokes. On a step, the wand does not fit, so the work is done with a hand tool a few inches wide, one surface at a time, working from the step below. The front edge needs extra attention because it collects the most dirt, and corners where the tread meets the riser and the wall need separate passes.

What gets cleaned on each step?

A stair tread is the flat part you step on, the riser is the vertical face between two treads, and the nosing is the rounded front edge where carpet wraps from tread to riser. We clean all three on every step.

Where the dirt goes on stairs:

  • The nosing. Every foot lands near it, so it collects grit and wears first. This is where dark lines show up.
  • The center of the tread is the main walking path, the same as a traffic lane in a hallway.
  • At the back corners of the tread, dust and pet hair collect where the tread meets the riser and the wall, and a regular vacuum often misses them.
  • Risers get mostly scuffs from shoes and toes, plus dust.

How much does cleaning a landing cost?

A landing is $10. It is the flat platform where a staircase turns or pauses, larger than a step, so it costs twice as much. If your staircase turns, count the landings when you count the steps, and send a photo from the bottom so we can see the layout.

If the top of the stairs opens into a carpeted hallway, that hallway is its own line: up to 80 sq ft is $42 when booked with two or more rooms.

Worked example: what does a 14-step staircase cost?

A 14-step staircase is $70 on its own, or $80 with one landing. What you actually pay depends on what else is in the visit. Four common cases:

What you bookLine itemsTotal
Stairs only, 14 steps$70, below the minimum$220 (visit minimum)
3 rooms plus 14 steps$220 package + $70$290
3 rooms, hallway, 14 steps, 1 landing$220 + $42 + $70 + $10$342
Empty 2-bedroom townhouse at move-out, 14 steps, 1 landing$226 + $70 + $10$306

The move-out line uses our move-out carpet cleaning price for an empty unit, which counts stairs separately at the same $5 per step and $10 per landing. If you book it in the same visit as our move-out clean, that unit is $20 less. Rooms between 200 and 300 sq ft are $102 instead of $82, so a large living room can change the total. For whole-house examples, see carpet cleaning cost for a 3- or 4-bedroom house.

How long do stairs take to dry?

Stairs dry in about the same time as the rest of the carpet: usually 4 to 8 hours after hot water extraction, and up to 12 hours in cold, damp weather. We finish each step with extra dry passes to pull water back out, and air movers start the drying before we leave. Our guide to how long carpet takes to dry covers what speeds it up.

You can use the stairs before they are fully dry, but carefully. Damp carpet on a step is easier to slip on than dry carpet, so:

  • Walk in clean socks or soft indoor shoes, not bare feet with lotion or outdoor shoes.
  • Use the handrail every time.
  • Keep pets off the stairs until they are dry. A gate at the bottom helps.
  • If you have a second way up, use it for the first few hours.

How do you keep carpeted stairs cleaner between cleanings?

Vacuum them often, and do the corners. Stairs are a traffic lane: every trip up and down lands on the same narrow strip. Shaw Floors, a carpet manufacturer, recommends vacuuming traffic lanes daily and scheduling professional hot water extraction every 6 to 18 months, depending on traffic.

A simple routine for stairs:

  • Vacuum the stairs at least weekly with a hand vacuum or the hose and crevice tool, working top to bottom.
  • Run the crevice tool along the back corner of each tread, where dust and hair collect.
  • Keep shoes at the door so grit does not get carried up.
  • Blot spills right away with a white cloth and plain water. Do not scrub, and skip store sprays that leave a sticky residue.
  • Book a professional cleaning when the nosings start to look gray, before soil wears the fiber.

If you also have a sectional in the living room at the bottom of those stairs, our article on sectional couch cleaning cost explains how combining it with carpet clears the minimum.

What stair cleaning cannot fix

Cleaning removes soil and most stains. It does not repair carpet. On stairs, the limits are easy to see:

  • Worn or crushed nosings. Fiber that has worn down at the front edge stays worn. It looks cleaner, not new.
  • Fraying, loose or bunched carpet. That is a repair or re-stretching job for a flooring installer. We do not repair or stretch carpet.
  • Bleach spots and dye stains. These are missing color, not dirt.
  • Old pet urine that soaked into the pad under a step. Surface treatment reduces odor but may not remove it.

We point these out in the pre-inspection and photograph them before we start, so you know what to expect.

FAQ

Can I clean carpeted stairs with a rental machine?

You can. Use little solution, make extra dry passes and blot spots rather than scrub, because stairs are where too much water and leftover detergent show first. If the front edges stay gray after you finish, they usually need a pre-spray, agitation and more rinse passes, done slowly by hand on each step. That hand work is what a professional visit adds.

Will cleaning remove the gray line on the stair edges?

Usually it lightens a lot, because that line is mostly ground-in soil at the front edge. Where the fiber itself is worn or crushed, the edge looks cleaner but stays worn. We tell you which case you have from your photos before the visit.

Should I vacuum the stairs before you come?

No need. We vacuum every step first, because dry grit should come out before any water goes down. What helps is clearing shoes, baskets and toys off the stairs and putting pets behind a gate or door.
