How to keep a fabric couch clean with pets: a weekly routine, pet hair tools, safe spot cleaning, and when a pro clean pays off. Text for a written price.

To keep a fabric couch clean with pets, cover your pet’s spots with washable throws, vacuum once or twice a week with an upholstery tool, and blot accidents within minutes without rubbing. Spot clean only with what the fabric code on the tag allows. Then book a professional cleaning about once a year, or sooner if odor builds up.

This guide covers a routine you can keep up, tools for pet hair, what to do after an accident, and when home care is no longer enough. At that point our upholstery cleaning and pet odor treatment pick up where the routine stops.

How often should a couch be cleaned with dogs?

Light care daily, a proper vacuum twice a week, and a professional cleaning about once a year. Heavy shedders, dogs that sleep on the couch every night, or repeated accidents can justify more. The times below are for a standard 3-seat sofa.

How oftenTaskTime
DailyShake out the throw on your pet’s spot; quick pass with a lint roller or rubber brush on the seat they use2 minutes
Twice a weekVacuum seats, arms and back with the upholstery tool5 minutes
WeeklyCushions off: vacuum the deck, the seams and the crevices with the crevice tool; flip and rotate cushions if they are loose10 minutes
WeeklyWash the throws and the pet’s beddingOne machine load
MonthlyMove the couch and vacuum the floor underneath; check arms and headrests for dark oily patches10 minutes

Rotating loose cushions spreads wear and body oil across all of them, instead of one cushion going flat and dark first.

La-Z-Boy’s care guide recommends frequent vacuuming or light brushing with a nonmetallic, stiff bristle brush to remove dust and grime from fabric upholstery. With pets, frequent means weekly at least.

How do you get pet hair off a fabric couch?

Use suction first and friction second. A vacuum removes loose hair and the grit under it. A rubber tool then pulls out the hair woven into the fabric.

What works on fabric couches:

  • An upholstery tool with a brush strip. Short strokes, one direction, then across. Go over seams twice.
  • The crevice tool, along every seam, under the cushions and where the back meets the seat. That is where hair and crumbs collect.
  • A rubber brush or rubber glove. Sweep across the fabric toward you and the hair balls up. Keep it dry on fabrics coded S or X; on W and WS fabrics a barely damp glove grabs more.
  • A lint roller, fine for a quick pass before guests, too slow for a whole couch.
  • A vacuum with sealed filtration. It keeps fine dust and dander in the bag instead of blowing it back into the room.

Avoid stiff metal pet combs and grooming brushes on the couch. They can pull loops and snag weaves. For the rest of the house, see what a pet friendly cleaning service does and what heavy pet hair costs.

Should you use throws or covers on a couch with pets?

The simplest protection is a washable layer where your pet actually lies. A machine-washable throw or blanket on that spot catches most hair, oil and paw dirt, and you can wash it every week. Two throws let you swap one out while the other is in the wash.

Do not take the zippered covers off the cushions to put them in the washing machine, even if it seems easier. La-Z-Boy’s guide says cushion covers should not be removed and laundered (code W) or dry cleaned (code S). Washed covers can shrink, fade or stop matching the rest of the couch.

A pet bed next to the couch, in the spot your pet already likes, gives them an alternative. Regular nail trims also help, because long claws snag loops and catch on woven fabrics.

What is safe for spot cleaning a couch?

Whatever the fabric allows, and nothing more. Check the tag under a seat cushion before using anything wet:

CodeSpot cleaning at home
WWater-based upholstery cleaner or foam, applied to a cloth, then blotted
SWater-free dry cleaning solvent only, with a window open; no water at all
WSEither type; water-based for food and drinks, solvent for oily marks
XVacuum or brush only; no liquid of any kind

For every code: test in a hidden spot first, use as little product as possible, and blot from the outside of the spot toward the middle so it does not spread. On our jobs we use plant-based and EPA Safer Choice products, fragrance-free on request. Our guide to upholstery cleaning codes W, S, WS and X explains each letter in detail.

What should you do right after a pet accident on the couch?

Act fast, blot hard, and keep moisture to a minimum. Fresh urine on a cushion cover is much easier to deal with than urine that has soaked into the foam.

  1. Press paper towels or a white cloth firmly onto the spot with your hand. Replace them until they come up almost dry.
  2. Do not rub. Rubbing pushes urine deeper and frays the fabric.
  3. On W or WS fabric, blot with a cloth barely dampened with cool water, then blot dry again. On S or X fabric, stop after blotting.
  4. Do not use heat: no hair dryer, iron or steamer. Heat can set the stain and the odor.
  5. Skip ammonia and bleach products. Bleach can strip color from fabric, and neither is what professionals use on urine; we use enzyme and oxygen-based products.
  6. Stand the cushion on edge with a fan on it so it dries quickly.

For vomit, scrape up solids first with a spoon or card, then blot as above. If the same spot gets repeated accidents, the urine is probably in the foam, and home blotting will not reach it.

When should a couch be professionally cleaned?

For a home with pets, about once a year is a sensible rhythm. Book sooner if any of these apply:

  • The couch looks gray or dull overall, not just in one spot. La-Z-Boy recommends a professional service once a piece reaches an overall soiled condition.
  • Arms and headrests have dark, slightly shiny patches from skin and fur oils.
  • A smell stays after a full vacuum and a day of airing.
  • There was an accident you could not fully blot, or a spot keeps reappearing.
  • You tried a store spray and it left a ring.

Our pet odor treatment for upholstery covers the surface of the cushion cover at $52 per affected area, added to the upholstery clean. Tell us where the pet has had accidents, because old spots are hard to see. Urine that went into the foam core may not fully come out, and we say so in the quote.

Upholstery prices are a loveseat $129, sofa $169, sectional $236–266 and armchair $89, with a $180 visit minimum, including travel to Kenmore and our other licensed cities. For a realistic picture of what comes out, read does professional upholstery cleaning work.

Do the same habits help with pet smells in carpet?

Mostly, yes. Weekly vacuuming, fast blotting and no heat apply to carpet too. Carpet has one extra layer of risk: the pad underneath, which can hold urine and odor long after the surface looks clean. If the room smells stale or musty rather than like your pet, the cause may be moisture rather than an accident. Our article on musty carpet smell in Pacific Northwest homes walks through the causes, and how often to clean carpets with kids and pets covers the carpet schedule.

FAQ

Can I use a steam cleaner on pet urine on my couch?

Not on urine. Heat can set both the stain and the odor. Blot it, then treat it with an enzyme product on fabrics coded W or WS. On S or X fabric, blot and leave the rest to a professional.

Does baking soda get pet smell out of a couch?

It can absorb a little surface odor on fabric that tolerates it: sprinkle, leave it for a few hours, then vacuum every grain out with the upholstery tool. It does not break down urine, so a smell from an accident usually needs an enzyme or oxidizing treatment.

How do I keep my dog off the couch while it dries?

A couch usually needs 2–6 hours to dry after a professional clean. Close the room door if you can, or block the seats with something that lets air reach the fabric, such as an upturned laundry basket. Do not cover it with a sheet until it is dry.
