How to Clean an Oven With Less Harsh Chemicals: Our Steam Method
How to clean an oven without harsh chemicals: racks, steam, mild degreaser, door glass. Oven add-on $56 in the Seattle area. Text for a written price.
By Yuri and Tatiana, owners of Shining Cleanse LLC, a family cleaning company based in Everett, WA and licensed in 10 cities across Snohomish and King County.
There is no chemical-free way to clean an oven (dish soap and baking soda count), but you can skip lye sprays. Soak the racks in hot soapy water, soften grease with steam or overnight baking soda paste, and wipe it off. Use a mild degreaser only on carbonized spots, then clean the door glass.
Inside the oven is a $56 add-on to a deep cleaning or standard clean, and included in every move-in/move-out clean. Here is how we do it.
Is it safe to use oven cleaner sprays?
They can be used safely if you follow the label, but many conventional oven cleaners contain sodium hydroxide (lye) and carry corrosive warnings: gloves, eye protection, ventilation, no contact with aluminum or skin. Residue left on the oven floor can smoke the next time you bake.
We do not bring lye-based oven cleaner. Our kit is dry steam at about 290°F, a mild degreaser (a hydrogen peroxide and citric acid blend), non-scratch pads and blue microfiber, the color we use only in kitchens.
How do you clean oven racks without chemicals?
Racks go first, because they need time. We put them in a deep utility sink or the bathtub with hot water and dish soap, and leave them while we clean the rest of the kitchen. The soap softens the carbon, and most of it then scrubs off with a non-scratch pad.
Buildup left at the welds gets a little degreaser and a second scrub. Racks go back in last.
Before
AfterHow do you steam-clean the oven interior?
Most home guides say to spread baking soda paste and wait overnight. We do not have overnight, so we use steam. Our steam cleaner produces dry steam at about 290°F at the nozzle. We point it at the worst areas: the floor, the back wall, around the element.
Heat softens the grease within minutes, and it wipes off with microfiber. For what steam cannot lift, usually carbonized splatters in the corners, we spray the degreaser, wait five minutes, scrub with a non-scratch pad and wipe with hot water. The same steamer does the heavy lifting in bathrooms too; see steam vs bleach in the bathroom.
Can you clean between the oven door glass?
Often, yes. Most cleanings stop at the inside of the door, but the pane you look through is usually layered with grease that fogs the view.
On many models the inner panel is removable: a few screws at the bottom of the door, slide it out, clean both sides with steam and degreaser, put it back. We check the model first. Where the glass is not designed to come out, we clean every side we can reach and tell you that the inner pane could not be reached, rather than forcing it.
Is oven cleaning included in a deep clean or move-out clean?
| Service | Inside the oven | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Standard clean | Add-on | +$56 |
| Deep clean (from $300) | Add-on | +$56 |
| Move-in / move-out clean (from $360) | Included | $0 extra |
A deep clean covers the oven exterior, the stovetop and behind the stove if it rolls out. Why we do not run a $56 oven-only visit is explained in oven cleaning service cost. All prices are on our pricing page. See the deep cleaning checklist, or the move-in cleaning checklist for an empty home.
We work the same way in Kenmore and our other licensed cities. Send a photo of the oven and we tell you what to expect.
Our jobFAQ
Is the self-clean cycle a good alternative?
It works for some ovens. The cycle heats the oven very high and burns residue to ash, which can smoke and smell, and it does not clean the inner door glass. Check your manual on whether the racks can stay in. Afterward the ash still has to be wiped out.
What should I do before you clean my oven?
Turn it off a few hours ahead so it is cool, and take out any pans you store inside. That is all. We bring the steamer, degreaser, pads and microfiber; the rest of our kit is in do house cleaners bring their own supplies.
Can you clean the inside of the fridge in the same visit?
Yes. Inside the fridge is also a $56 add-on: shelves out, washed and dried. Like the oven, it is included in a move-in/move-out clean.
