House Cleaning After Surgery: What to Book and When

Neatly made bed with white linens and two nightstand lamps, the kind of room to come home to after surgery

House cleaning after surgery: when to book a deep clean before your date, fresh linens, laundry and light visits during recovery. Text for a written price.

By Yuri and Tatiana, owners of Shining Cleanse LLC, a family cleaning company based in Everett, WA and licensed in 10 cities across Snohomish and King County.

For house cleaning after surgery, book a deep clean two to five days before the surgery date, so you come home to a clean house, then shorter visits every week or two while you recover. Fresh sheets, a clear path to the bathroom and a clean kitchen matter most. Your care team decides what you may do yourself.

We are Yuri and Tatiana, the two owners of Shining Cleanse, and we clean every home ourselves. This is how we would plan it for our own family. It is practical advice about a house, not medical advice: lifting limits, bathing and wound care are questions for your surgeon or nurse.

When should you schedule cleaning before a surgery date?

Two to five days before. Closer than that, and a moved operation leaves you with a cleaning on the wrong day. Much earlier, and the kitchen and bathroom are back to normal by the time you get home.

The first visit should usually be a deep cleaning, not a standard one. A deep clean reaches baseboards, vents, light fixtures, inside empty cabinets and the scale on shower glass, the work a quick tidy skips and the work you will not be doing for a while. If the home was professionally cleaned in the last month or so, a standard visit is enough.

Tell us the surgery date in your first text. Dates move. If yours does, move the cleaning with it; with 24 hours notice there is no charge.

What should be cleaned before you come home from the hospital?

The rooms you will actually use in the first two weeks. For most people that is a short list:

AreaWhat to focus on
BedroomFresh sheets, nightstand cleared and wiped, floor vacuumed so nothing is underfoot
Path to the bathroomFloors clean and clear; loose rugs moved to wherever you decide
BathroomToilet, sink, tub or shower, mirror, floor; towels where you can reach them
KitchenCounters, sink, stovetop, inside the microwave, fridge handles; old food out of the fridge
Living roomThe chair or couch where you will spend the day, and the table beside it

Inside the fridge is a $56 add-on. Here it earns its price, because whoever stocks the fridge for your recovery puts food into a clean one. Our deep cleaning checklist covers the rest room by room.

One thing we do not do is move heavy furniture. If a bed has to come downstairs, or a dresser blocks the route for a walker, ask family or movers to do it before we come. We then clean the floor it uncovers, which has usually not been seen in years.

Can a cleaner change bed linens and do laundry?

Yes. We make beds with the fresh linens you leave out, and laundry wash and fold is a $46 add-on to a cleaning. Leave the clean set on the bed or a chair and tell us which hamper is the laundry.

Linens are the part people forget. You will spend more time in bed than usual, and you will not want to wrestle a fitted sheet. We suggest two clean sets: one on the bed, one folded in the room, so a family member can swap them halfway through the first week without hunting through the closet.

How often should the home be cleaned during recovery?

Every week or every two weeks for the first month or two, then back to whatever you had before. Someone recovering makes less mess, but they also do none of the cleaning, and the kitchen, bathroom and floors slip first.

Recurring visits are maintenance visits at a fixed price per visit after the first clean, and the more often we come, the less each visit costs:

FrequencyStudio or 1 bed2 bed3 bed
Weekly$270$300$330
Every two weeks$290$320$350
Monthly$320$350$380

There is no contract. When you are back on your feet, you stop with a text. If you cannot choose between the first two rows, our weekly vs biweekly comparison works through it, and all prices are on our pricing page.

If money is tight, keep the deep clean and drop a regular visit, not the other way around. The deep clean does the work you physically cannot do for a while; regular visits only hold the level. Our piece on whether a deep clean is worth it has the longer version of that argument.

How do you book cleaning for a parent after surgery?

A lot of these bookings come from a son or daughter who lives somewhere else. That works fine by text, and one complete message saves a day of back and forth. Put in it:

  • the address and city,
  • bedrooms and bathrooms,
  • 2–4 photos of the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom,
  • the surgery and expected discharge dates,
  • how we get in (door code, lockbox, a neighbor with a key),
  • who pays, and who we text on the day.

We reply with the hours and the price in writing. You pay for the hours we actually work, never more than the written price without your yes, so there is no surprise bill landing on a parent who is resting. We text 30 minutes before we arrive, and the same two people come every visit, which matters to someone who does not like strangers in the house. Payment is on completion: by business Zelle, which works from any state, or by card on our Square terminal if someone is home at the visit.

Tell us the small things in advance: a parent who naps after lunch, a dog that gets anxious, a room that stays closed. We keep notes for recurring visits so nobody has to explain it twice.

What does a cleaner not do after surgery?

We clean the home. We are not caregivers, so we do not help with bathing, dressing, medication or wound care. We do not handle sharps containers or used medical supplies; keep those where your care team told you. We clean to about 8 feet and do not lift heavy furniture.

We work in Kenmore and nine other licensed cities in Snohomish and King County, and the plan above is the same in all of them.

FAQ

Do I need to be home during the cleaning?

No. Many clients leave a lockbox or door code. If you are home and resting, tell us which room to leave for last and we work around you. The vacuum is loud for a few minutes per room; the rest of the visit is mostly wiping and steam.

Can you use fragrance-free products?

Yes. We use plant-based and EPA Safer Choice products by default and switch to fragrance-free ones on request. If your care team gave you rules about products or strong smells, tell us when you book and we plan around them.

Should I book the deep clean after surgery instead of before?

Before is easier on you. A deep clean takes several hours and moves through every room, which is a lot of activity around someone resting. If the surgery was sudden, book a standard visit first and the deep clean once you are up and about.

How much does a cleaning before surgery cost?

A deep clean is $300 for a studio or 1 bedroom, $360 for 2 bedrooms, $480 for 3 and $600 for a typical 4 bedroom, at $120 an hour for two cleaners ($60 per person-hour). Inside the fridge adds $56 and laundry $46. The exact number comes back in writing from your photos.
